A Spontaneous Adventure in Nosara

It’s January 2024, and I'm in a car heading from Liberia Airport in Costa Rica to Nosara, a little beach village popular with yogis and surfers, located in the Blue Zone. The driver is friendly and asks if I'm hungry and want to stop somewhere to eat before we hit the bumpy road. I decline; it’s late, and I'm eager to reach the hotel. As we drive through the darkness, the driver shares travel tips, like an amazing guide he knows in the southern part of Costa Rica, who's apparently famous on TikTok. He also mentions a rodeo in town and advises me on the best day and time to go and where to sit. I'm grateful for the insider info.

As I settle into my hotel room a wave of doubt hits me. I mean, a three week trip to Nosara with no real agenda. Financially, it's not exactly prime time for a long “vacation” (Vacation in quotation marks because I'm also here to do some work). I remember last year's trip to Costa Rica and how it kicked off a whole chain of events in 2023. So, why am I back? To quiet my mind, open myself up to new ideas and inspiration, to reconnect with a friend, immerse myself in yoga, explore the area, learn Spanish, and let life unfold as it may.

The next morning, I wake up to the calls of howler monkeys as my alarm clock, the sun is up and I walk to meet my friend at her hotel across the road. We go boogie boarding in the early morning sun, the water is so warm. My guilt and worry start to wash away, as if the waves had something to do with it… and after a great yoga class, lunch and an afternoon in the shady tropical hotel grounds with my friend, I'm feeling better, lighter….

Nosara reveals its charms in subtle ways, after a few days of early mornings in the ocean, daily yoga, sunset on the beach, meeting people and getting to know the area, the hidden gems, the best places to get this or that… I'm feeling like I'm here for a reason. It is starting to make sense. Sometimes not having a plan is a plan, and it can be just the right thing.

My time in Nosara was filled with little adventures and quiet time, long beach walks, exploring town with my friends, time in the ocean, yoga, breathwork, sound baths, cold plunges, art, meditation, great seafood, dinners and sunsets with new friends, Spanish lessons, lots of walking, 5 rhythm dance with Amber Ryan, an office in the jungle and so much more.

I realize that sometimes the most meaningful experiences emerge when we embrace a bit of discomfort. Stepping into the unknown can lead us to unexpected discoveries. It takes courage to venture into uncertainty, but in doing so, we may uncover insights about ourselves. I found that letting go of rigid plans allowed space for serendipity and spontaneity to weave their magic.

So, if there's a destination that's calling to you, don't hesitate to answer. Trust in the journey, and let the adventure unfold.  I know there was a reason I went and not all is revealed yet, I'm still processing. I just know it was just what I needed.

Some of my favorites things to do in Nosara:

In Nosara, the vibe is all about embracing the beauty of nature and soaking up the laid-back atmosphere. Start your day with a swim in the ocean or a surf session at Playa Guione. Afterward, recharge with a yoga class overlooking the ocean – it's the perfect way to find your zen.

For a taste of local life, don't miss the Nosara Farmers Market, where you can mingle with locals, sample delicious tropical fruits, and browse through handmade crafts. It's a lively hub of activity that gives you a real sense of the community here.

If you're craving some adventure, Nosara's got you covered. Whether it's horseback riding through the jungle, going on a guided nature hike to spot wildlife, taking a pottery class or a Spanish class at the Nosara Spanish Institute, or watching turtle hatchings, there's no shortage of ways to connect with nature and culture.

As the day winds down, catch the breathtaking sunset and  treat yourself to dinner at La Luna, where you can savor fresh seafood dishes while taking in the mesmerizing views of the ocean.
